First line intervention for adults experiencing mental health crisis. These crisis may be defined as psychiatric symptoms such as thoughts of self-harm or harming others. Each Welfare region in Idaho has a community health center and one or more satellite offices which provide 24 hour crisis response services such as hotlines, emergency face-to-face psychiatric evaluations, treatment referral services and consultations with law enforcement agencies, local hospitals, and other social service organizations as requested.

Services are targeted for individuals, at least 18 years of age, who suffer from the most severe and persistent forms of mental illness. The individual must have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder or borderline personality disorder. This psychiatric disorder must be of sufficient severity to cause a disturbance in role performance or coping skills in at least two areas of functioning, on either a continuous or intermittent basis. SPMI services include screening and referral, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric/medical service, short term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, and community supportive employment.

The Mental Health Program is administered by the Division of Behavior Health.
