The mission of the Environmental Health Program is to promote and protect the health of Idahoans by preventing or reducing exposure to environmental contaminants and hazards through collaboration, outreach, education, community involvement, and research.

*Environmental Health Education and Assessment Program. This program is responsible for assessing human health risks associated with exposure to toxic substances in Idaho's environment and informing and educating Idahoans about the identified health risks and ways to prevent or reduce exposure. Issues currently being addressed include conducting health assessments and environmental health education at hazardous waste sites and Superfund sites, addressing chemicals found in indoor and outdoor air, drinking water, and illicit drug labs, and working to assess health impacts of smoke from wildfire and agricultural burning.

*Indoor Environment Program. This program is responsible for informing and educating Idahoans about human health risks associated with exposure to indoor contaminants such as radon gas and lead-based paints and ways to prevent or reduce exposure.

*The Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory Program (IFCAP) informs Idahoans about possible contamination of water bodies that may impact fish and human health. By measuring the levels of contaminants in fish, IFCAP can advise the public on how much fish is safe to eat.

Services Provided: Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in Idaho accounting for 42% of deaths each year. Stroke is the #1 cause of serious disability and the #3 cause of death. Our mission is to reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke.

Heart disease does not respect age or gender or race.
More babies born with congenital defects have defects of the cardiovascular system than any other problem.
More women have died of cardiovascular disease than men since 1984.
Hispanics have a much higher rate of cardiovascular disease than the general population.

In order to continue to fight these killers, the American Heart Association:
Trains hundreds of Idahoans in basic and advanced CPR courses each year.
Has an 800 number available 24 hours a day to answer questions and make brochures available to the general public.
Has a web-site available to the general public and medical professionals.
Publishes countless brochures for the public and journals for medical professionals.
Advocates for laws and policies to support health.
Has many community based initiatives such as Operation Heartbeat, Operation Stroke, Heart at Work, and Jump Rope for Heart.
Pledges to spend at least 30% of our income on research - the highest funding source for cardiovascular research outside the federal government - some of the research carried on right here in Idaho.
Holds international conferences for medical professionals.
