This program is responsible for assessing human health risks associated with exposure to toxic substances in Idaho's environment and informing and educating Idahoans about the identified health risks and ways to prevent or reduce exposure. Issues currently being addressed include conducting health assessments and environmental health education at hazardous waste sites and Superfund sites, addressing chemicals found in indoor and outdoor air, drinking water, and illicit drug labs, and working to assess health impacts of smoke from wildfire and agricultural burning.

*Indoor Environment Program. This program is responsible for informing and educating Idahoans about human health risks associated with exposure to indoor contaminants such as radon gas and lead-based paints and ways to prevent or reduce exposure.

*The Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory Program (IFCAP) informs Idahoans about possible contamination of water bodies that may impact fish and human health. By measuring the levels of contaminants in fish, IFCAP can advise the public on how much fish is safe to eat.

The primary role of the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories (IBL) is to provide laboratory services to support the programs of the Department, those delegated to the public health districts, and those of other state agencies. Through our four core service areas: testing, inspection, training, and outreach, the IBL identifies and monitors acute and chronic health threats with our public health partners. The bureau is organized in five sections:

5. Laboratory Preparedness and Response, jointly managed by Biological Threat Coordinator Walt Delong (334-2235 ext. 252) and Chemical Threat Coordinator Michael Stevenson (334-2235 ext. 269). DISTRICT OFFICE: Idaho's seven health districts work in close cooperation with the Department of Health and Welfare and numerous other state and local agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by the county commissioners. The districts are not part of any state agency. Each district responds to local needs to provide an array of services that may vary from district to district. Services range from community health nursing and home health nursing to environmental health, dental hygiene and nutrition programs. Many services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics offered at the health department or occasionally at special off-site clinics. Routine childhood vaccinations are low cost or no cost if the parent is unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are offered by appointment. Please call the local health department to find out which specific vaccines are needed for each destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diptheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccine may also be available. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) allows you, your family, and your Doctor will know when and for what you have been immunized and if you are current on your immunizations. It will also help insure you only get the vaccines you need when you need them.
