Description: Programs that help individuals with mental, physical or developmental disabilities, substance abuse disorders, chronic health conditions or other problems develop new interests, sharpen their social skills and gain a sense of self-achievement through a structured series of leisure-time activities which may include arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, sports, games, social gatherings and community outings. Therapy goals may differ for different populations, e.g., improved hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills may be desired outcomes for people with physical disabilities. (AIRS RP-8000.7400)

Eligibility: People with physical or developmental disabilities who can demonstrate that a Canine Companions assistance dog will enhance their independence or their quality of life are qualified to apply. Also eligible are professionals working for organizations that provide physical or mental health care to clients who will benefit from interaction with a facility dog. Canine Companions can only accept a limited number of applications per year. Although many individuals with disabilities are eligible and in need of an assistance dog, Canine Companions will determine and select those individuals where the tasks provided by Canine Companions highly trained dogs will be of the greatest benefit.
Services Provided: Canine Companions is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Canine Companions trains four types of assistance dogs:
-Service Teams - assist adults with physical disabilities by performing daily tasks.
-Hearing Teams - alert the deaf and hard of hearing to important sounds.
-Skilled Companion Teams - enhance independence for children and adults with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities.
-Facility Teams - work with a professional in a visitation, education or healthcare setting.

Services Provided: "Our group begins with an opening circle that includes song, movement, and a “social check-in” for readiness to interact. Our primary activities are structured, yet free-flowing to meet the current needs of the group. The therapist (Music and/or OT) bring rhythm, sequencing, emotion sharing, self-regulation, and focus into the social exchanges. Group activities may include physical movement, sensory exploration, and project oriented tasks. Every child is encouraged to participate at their comfort level with the therapist modeling to enhance opportunities to gain greater skills.

We believe in promoting the primary “occupation” of children in an environment where small groups of children with different ability levels can come together to socialize and participate with one another. Social skills are enhanced through opportunities for stimulation to the motor, sensory, language, and emotional systems of the body. We agree that promoting social opportunities provides enhanced peer relations, self-regulation, self-confidence, flexibility, and body coordination for greater assimilation into other challenging daily experiences.
