The individual must have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder or borderline personality disorder. This psychiatric disorder must be of sufficient severity to cause a disturbance in role performance or coping skills in at least two areas of functioning, on either a continuous or intermittent basis. SPMI services include screening and referral, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric/medical service, short term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, and community supportive employment.

Eligibility: A VR Counselor will assess your situation and determine whether or not you are eligible for VR services. Must have a physical or mental impairment (disability), which constitutes or results in a substantial impediment (barrier) to employment and requires
Services Provided: The Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is a State of Idaho agency governed by the Idaho State Board of Education. The primary goal is employment. Vocational Rehabilitation provides individualized vocational guidance and counseling as well as other services to assist people with disabilities to make informed choices concerning their careers so that they can become successfully employed. The Division is responsible for administering two major programs. They are the Renal Disease Program and the Vocational Rehabilitation Program.

Renal Disease:
The Division provides two programs for individuals who have renal (kidney) disease:

1. A state-supported medical assistance program that coordinates the medical and financial aspects of clients with end-stage renal disease. A person's ability to pay for their own services is considered in determining eligibility for this program.
2. A program designed for those kidney patients who are capable of employment. These people are served through the Vocational Rehabilitation Program.

Individuals with Mental Illness:

VR works closely with The Department of Health and Welfare's Mental Health Program to provide services to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Services are provided utilizing a team approach and are focused on assisting the mental health clientele to work in the community. Assertive Community Action (ACT) teams have been established around the State.

Students with Disabilities:

VR assists students with disabilities who require assistance with the transition from school to employment. VR maintains relationships with schools throughout the state to serve students needing assistance. Any student can apply directly for services with referral from the school. These individuals must meet the vocational rehabilitation eligibility criteria.

Migrant Seasonal Farm Workers (MSFW):

VR maintains a steadfast commitment to serving those with disabilities from minority populations. VR assists these workers who, due to a disability, can no longer continue their traditional line of work or who need assistance to continue migrant employment.

Public Offenders:

VR has taken a pro-active stance in assisting inmates with disabilities to transition into the community by developing a program to concentrate on this clientele. Utilizing a team approach, counselors work collaboratively with the client, the Department of Probation and Parole and medical experts to re-introduce the individual to the work world. The Division has gained a level of expertise that has resulted in a high success rate of individuals rehabilitated, a saving in institutional coasts and an overall net gain to the community.

Any individual with a disability that prevents him/her from working may apply.

The Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is a State of Idaho agency governed by the Idaho State Board of Education.
